BRUSSELS — As the threat of war looms the world enters a new day of high-level, high-stakes diplomacy with European leaders striving to reinvigorate stalled peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides Moscow and NATO allies flex thier millitary might and put on a show of resolve by continuing to mobilize their forces.
So, here’s a look at what is happening where and why:
AFTER THE MACRON AND PUTIN MEETING IN MOSCOW, ALL EYES ARE ON UKRAINE
After more than five hours of talks on Monday with President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron shuttled off today to the capital of Ukraine to brief President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the developments of his meeting with Russia’s leader and share details of what might be needed to avert the possible invasion.
One of the key tipping points in any negotiation between the sides is NATO’s continued expansion. Putin sitting prominently in the spotlight of international diplomacy, he reiterated Monday his opposition to NATO’s continued expansion, mostly to Ukraine, but he did signal that he is willing to keep talking, even though more than 100,000 of his Russian troops are amassed near Ukraine and thousands more in Belarus painting an imminent and honestly bleak picture of any hope of aversion.
Macron, who’s trying to revive the “Normandy Format” peace talks aimed at ending almost eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine in which more than 14,000 people have died, said Tuesday that his meeting with Putin helped to ensure that “there’s no degradation and no (further) escalation.” All we can do as the rest of the world watches on with baited breath is hope and pray that his efforts are not in vain.
