Former President Donald Trump still holds a majority lead of Republicans, recently polled that shows over half of them would support him for president if he were to run in 2024.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos Poll show Trump’s favorability rating among Republicans stands at 82%. The polling also showed that among Republican frontrunners for president, Trump received the greatest support at 54%.
Trump’s closest contender is currently Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, who was 43-points behind at 11%, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence at 8% and former South Carolina Governor and Trump administration official Nikki Haley at 4%.
The polling indicated 14% said they weren’t sure who they would support as of yet.
Although Trump has not publicly announced a run for president yet he has hinted to it repeatedly and more specifically that he would make his final dscision after the upcoming midterm elections. Although he did tell Fox News in a November interview “I think a lot of people will be very happy, frankly, with the decision"
The GOP has been surging in midterm polling. Last month, CNBC, ABC/Washington Post and Rasmussen all gave the Republican Party at least a 10-point advantage in generic congressional balloting. The Reuters/Ipsos poll gave Democrats an advantage in the same generic polling but showed Independents were more likely to vote Republican.
With President Joe Biden’s favorability rating seeming to sink further and further with each twist surrounding the administration and now being lower than Trump’s rating at this point last year, according to RealClearPolitics. However, the familiarity ratings from the Reuters/Ipsos poll show Biden leads Trump by a point, 99% to 98%. President Biden is currently claiming that he plans to run for reelection in 2024 if he remains in good health.
